The Gym Song (ORIGINAL!)

*cheesy grin*

The Gym Song

Wake up, go to the gym
It's time to get yourself moving
No one else can do the right thing for you, but you.

Takes a little will power
Each time, you will get stronger
Keep your eyes set on the prize
and just move, MOVE!

I know that you're tired
everyone around you is too,
but if you just give up today
then what will we all do? So...

Wake up, go to the gym
It's time to get yourself moving
No one else can do the right thing for you, but you.

Sometimes I feel like rebuking the world we live in.

When will we realize that WE ARE NOT ALONE??

We are often our own worst enemies.
We tear ourselves apart with our insecurities and frustrations because of the ruts we inevitably get into trying to change ourselves for the better, only to come up losers.

Don't we realize that it's impossible for us alone, but not for God?

Is God not stronger than sin?
Has He not defeated death and separation?
Surely He is stronger that "self"!??
Can He not conquer ANYTHING in our lives?

Yet... why do we choose to give in to the darkness??????

That's all the words I can muster up right now.

Mindfulness & Thankfulness

The last few days I've been leading out morning meditation exercises for our school's Staff Training sessions. Then tonight, while fighting to focus on some difficult positions in Hot Yoga , I was reminded of some very important life lessons.

I will share two of them with you today.

First and foremost is mindfulness.
Simply put, paying attention selectively.

Modern society bombards the individual with a myriad of (sometimes useless) stimuli. Nevermind that naturally, our senses are already on overload, nowadays we also have to contend with technology, the media, traffic. Ha!

And then we wonder why we have so much difficulty focusing on the things that matter.
Well, firstly, each person's brain is made, developed, and used uniquely. And the differences in the activation of our brain often causes differences in our overt behaviours - whether we are aware of it or not.

Hence I cannot stress enough the importance of intentionally selecting what we pay attention to and practising keeping that attention on that one thing.
This can range from simply paying attention to a simple task one is carrying out, to writing a long essay, critically solving a difficult problem.

Without attention, there is no processing, no retention, and no recall.
In other words, no learning.
Ok, perhaps there is not a complete absence of learning... since our cells can still learn and remember things on a physical cellular level.

How to practice paying attention you ask?
Well, there are many ways.
Just the simple awareness that you want to pay more attention sometimes is half the battle won.
Start noticing when you "tune out" and make an effort to pay more attention whenever you are presented with a familiar "tune out" situation.

For example, when someone is telling you a long story about what happened on the way home today... You suddenly find yourself drifting off, wondering what you should eat for lunch, who sent you an email, what book to read tonight before going to bed...
Instead, once that person starts telling a story, tell yourself to pay attention.
Actively look at the person, try to visualize what he/she is saying...
The more you do it, the easier it will become!

Next, there is meditation. (Of course I would get around to that at some point!)
When, in meditation, you start to block off all the senses one by one, you are selectively paying attention.
Next, keep talking to yourself, telling yourself to focus on the sound of your breath.
As your breathing gets longer, deeper, louder, and more rhythmic, you might find your mind wandering. Each time it does so, just acknowledge that it did, push the thought away, and continue to focus on the breath.
Patience.
Patience and lots of practice.

It is important to develop this ability to live life mindfully.
Without it, our lives would pass us by unknowingly and without purpose.
Living life with awareness is essential to living a rich purposeful life!

Now, this awareness of mindfulness brings me to the second important life lesson:
Thankfulness.

As you can see, the slogan of my blog is "Thankfulness is the Beginning of Happiness".
Sometimes the only hindrance to thankfulness is the lack of mindful appreciation.

If we take this time, for example, to examine the breath again.
What a wonderful, frequent and yet much taken for granted reflex/habit this is!
As you pay attention to your breath, you start noticing how it feels when you breathe in and out...
How do you feel if you stave off the inhale for a little longer than usual ?
You feel deprived and flooded with relief once you finally take in the air that you so long for.
The fact is that breathing is life-giving... and that we are such fragile creatures living in a fragile temporary world...

How ironic it is that we can so easily take each breath of life and not even realize it!
So when one practices mindful breathing, one can bring to the forefront a newfound gratefulness for life itself. A gratefulness to our Creator for giving us this Breath of Life.... and for sustaining it.
In addition, an awe that despite our shameful negligence to continually praise God for this ability to breathe, here we are... still alive, still breathing, still not realizing the importance of the breath.

What a generous, forgiving Lord we serve.
How undeserving we are.

And how great the concept of Grace truly is...
When approached with mindfulness and thankfulness.

I have just shared with you the source of my happiness... :)

Shelter from the Storm...

I've been thinking.
If what I need in life is not attainable currently because I am fighting against myself because of past hurts and insecurities,.... what can I do to help myself change that?

In other words, how can I work on making that which I need attainable?
How do I get past those scars and mistrusts?
How do I dream again?
How can I trust in love again?

I guess this might be the first (tentative, baby) step at least.

********

Wrote another new song yesterday.
Am going to dedicate a few hours later today (between laundry and BodyBalance) to recording some songs that have not been recorded yet, and the newest song too.... it's called The Same Sun.

Clarity

Interesting - I've observed this several times before, but I keep forgetting how much I love running for the clarity I receive.

Must be the additional oxygen my brain receives. Ha.

Received clarity about certain ongoing issues in my life.
Struggles I've had for years.

Also, was a tad inspired - I have the beginnings of a song. :)
Let's see what happens...

****

As I strolled the last stretch of sidewalk back home, I thought of Reuben.
He used to go for runs around our neighbourhood a lot.
And while I listened to some music, I looked up at the slowly darkening sky, and wondered - this was probably a sight Reuben had seen many times before on his way back home from a run.
Again, I wished ever so much to be a fantastic runner like him.
Just to do him proud.

My memories and my grief have been pretty private so far.
Not that that's bad.
It's merely a realization - some are more open with their grief.

I choose who I reveal mine to.

And yet...

****

A few days ago, an acquantance made an observation about my music (/originals).
He remarked that he has gotten to know me more through my music than through actual interaction with me. LOL...
Well, it's funny... music seems to be my most honest means of communication.
In it, I feel comfortable baring my soul.
And not many pick up on it.
Yes, many people listen to the songs I sing and tell me I sing nice and write nice songs... but not many realize just how much of myself I am revealing through those very songs.

It's nice to have that rare listener who more than appreciates, but resonates. :)

Tick tick tick...

Almost forgot to mention - I booked my train ticket for my Song Kran trip to Phuket today! YAY!

Am really counting the days down now:

MySpace Countdown Clocks

Can't believe Song Kran's almost upon us already!
Didn't it just turn 2009???

Some of what I plan to do at Phuket:
  • Yoga, meditation and running in the am/pm - on the beach and while the sun rises/sets.
  • Enjoying good times with friends
  • Good food!
  • Swimming in the sea (LOVE IT!)
  • Hopefully I'll write some new songs
  • Snorkel

OK, unrelated to the beach trip (unless you count running as semi-related), I had a very satisfying run at the park nearby earlier this evening.
Almost felt like I wasn't in BKK... kinda like Singapore.

There were some older folks doing Taichi, plenty of other runners, and.... I discovered that there are supposedly regular dancing fountain shows (although, I ran by several times at the allegedly allotted times and saw no such shows. Tsk...!)

There is a small pool, a volleyball and basketball court, a few scattered playgrounds and stretching centres... Nice!

One run around the park I'm guessing is just a little more than 1 round around a normal sized track. Which is kinda good - I can keep track of my running progress easily.

Best of all, the grassy areas are very nice to relax on.
I found myself sitting solo near the water's edge... at first listening to music and enjoying the breeze, then soon, meditating.

What joy.

What I'm busy with at the moment...

Been making quite a few lists lately.
Here's another:

Things to do this week:
  • Finish unpacking, organizing and cleaning new apartment
  • Be nice to my kids
  • Start and finish this month's Class Newsletter
  • Attend Fuel meeting
  • Smile at my kids more
  • Lead worship at Fuel on Wed
  • Meet with parents
  • Do lesson plans for next 2 -3 weeks
  • Tell my kids I'm proud of them
  • Plan Song Kran beach trip to Phuket (YEAH!!)
  • Attend Thai Language & Culture workshop (part 2)
  • Spend more down time in The Word
  • Go for at least 1 run in the park
  • Watch the breeze in the trees
  • Prepare for Class Award ceremony

Funny... before I wrote that list, felt like I had tons to do... but really, I have only a few things... NOT! Some of those are really quite big jobs that take a long time. Eg: Class Newsletter=hours of cross-eyedness. Heh.

Oh well.

It's all good. Very good. :)

Half my Term Break is OVER!!! :(

When I was still a shy little girl in Primary school, I used to play basketball with the boys in the early mornings before school.

I don't remember much about whether I played well or not.
I only know that I enjoyed it.

Today I played my first "real" basketball game in practically 20 years.
I don't know why I never really tried playing with the other girls back in my college days, but I really enjoyed myself today!

So now I ache a LITTLE less from the kickboxing I did yesterday. :p

I've also just written my third song this week.
This one's simply called Rain.
A little more on the pensive side, but still uplifting... I think.

Determination, Dedication, and Discipline.

After an hour of a fitness program at school, I dragged myself down to the gym for a run.
I could tell that I was obviously tired out from the last few days and the workout at school. My timing wasn't as good, and my calves were tingling.

So I jogged at an easier pace (about 8km/hr) and tried to distract myself by watching sports on ESPN.

Now... I have NEVER actually watched sports.
But this was pretty interesting.
I saw these guys practically flying through the air - long jump of some sort.
I found myself almost cheering at one point when this guy in the lead managed to get a jump of more than 17 (meters I think?).
Are these people HUMAN???

I also watched some javelin throwing, high jump, and a 200 meter sprint (mens).
VERY inspiring.
Before long, I had run almost 3 km.
So I decided I'd stick in and run 4km.
Since watching sports seemed to be a pretty good distraction.

Next came some running events.
Nice.
I managed to take some mental notes:
mostly heel-toe runners.
Arms pump hard.
Focus written on faces.
The winner of one of the men's events was shown in slow-motion, and I noticed that his breathing was very deliberate and measured.
So far so good - points that I had been more or less trying to practices when I run.

Then came a women's race.
I think it was a cross-country.
Better still - I can observe how the gals run long distance.

Off they went at a pace that immediately shamed me.
Arm pumping hard, they stayed together in a pack.
Again, heel-toe.
But this time I noticed how they practically pulled the ground with their feet as they run.
I don't know how else to describe it other than pulling the ground.
It looked as if they used their feet and friction to give them more speed.

I looked at the distance covered on my treadmill - almost 5km!
So I decided to sprint the last bit to 5km.
Pumped up the speed to 12km/Hr.
As I pumped my arms, I tried doing what I had seen with my feet.
OK, a bit hard on the treadmill... somehow.
Or maybe I'm just not used to it.
But after a while, I noticed that my limbs felt like a well-oiled machine.

5km!
PHEW!

Slowed the pace - didn't want to kill my heart.
I'm not THAT in shape.... :p
