Such a powerful thing, but so often overlooked.
What is prayer?
Is there a right or wrong way to pray?
How should we pray?
These are some questions that my youth group explored today at Part 1 of our Spiritual Checkup.
Using Matthew 6:5-15 as a guide, here are some points to remember:
- Prayer should be honest, private, succinct, done with humility and without airs.
- Even when we don't know the words, the Spirit intercedes for us.
- God knows and hears our hearts, and prayer is a way to connect our hearts with God.
- Learning from The Lord's Prayer as a template,
- Begin with a greeting of worship and praise to our Great God
- Establish a connection
- Surrender to God before asking for anything
- Ask!
- for supplication,
- for humility,
- for forgiveness,
- for protection again evil
- End with a profession of faith and trust through worship and praise to God.
- Sign at the dotted line (Amen), reaffirming commitment and surrender to God's Will.
We also explored broken hearts in discussion.
How are hearts broken, and what can God do with broken people?
How should we react when we see ourselves in our true sinful nature?
Having described our symptoms, what medicine/diagnosis do we need to get better?
Part 2 next week will explore these issues as well as more group-based issues:
- What are my spiritual gifts?
- What is God calling me to do?
- Why should I serve?
- How can I serve?
- The other part of prayer - Intercession.
